Lebanon Shelled

This is real. Humanity merely cries out to us from behind the computer screen, but all the way in Lebanon the cries are real. Read the letter below:

Dear Family and Friends,

First of all, I want you to know that we are okay. We live up a mountain in a primarily Christian area far from the main fighting. As I mentioned before, from our home we can see the airport. The fire is still burning from two days ago.

It has now become clear to us that Israel had been waiting for this moment. We believe that the two soldiers captured were probably used as bait, sad and cruel as that sounds, to lure Hizbullah. The Israelis knowing that Hizbullah has been wanting to kidnap soldiers for a swap, plotted this and Hizbullah being aggressive took the bait. Just the week before close to 6,000 Israeli soldiers mobilized near the Lebanese border along with tanks, etc. They were planning something. I find it hard to believe that with a new mobilization, two soldiers were able to wander off and just get picked off by Hizbullah. And even if they didn’t set the trap, destroying a country is not a response to two kidnapped soldiers. Never in the history of war has a country made such an assault for those kidnapped. Still not saying that what Hizbullah did was right, but there is also no doubt that Israel’s over reaction demonstrates a ploy to not only destroy Hizbullah but also the rest of Lebanon. There is no other explanation for the extremely hostile onslaught that has occurred and for President Bush to turn his head the other way. Not that the US ever admonishes Israel for anything it does anyway. The European Union, Russia and China all condemn Israel’s exaggerated aggression yet in the UN Security Council, the United States has already vetoed two resolutions condemning Israel. Thus, no action can be taken against Israel. From the U.S. and Israel\’s point of view, Hizbullah is a terrorist organization and they had planned from long before this assault. The Lebanese are once again caught in the middle and the people are suffering greatly. \n To hear Bush say that Israel has a right to defend itself with this level of retaliation really makes me wonder what kind of conscience the US government has. I heard US representative Allen from I don\’t know what state approve of Israel\’s actions stating that Israel is just targeting Hizbullah targets. Well, let me tell you the facts not just some US propaganda for this onslaught. You come to your own conclusions:

While I said that for the moment we are safe, the situation is extremely serious and critical. I sat in long lines filling up my car tanks. Yesterday, the grocery stores were packed. I got the last two bags of flour. I picked up the last two cans of powdered milk on the shelf. \n I stocked up on water. Israel has strangled the country. Israel has blocked all ports. The airport has now been hit on six separate occasions. The road to Damascus, Syria, a major thoroughfare and escape route has been bombed in several places. \n The Israelis have bombed over 12 bridges throughout the country. They have bombed two other minor local airports. They have bombed villages in south of Lebanon repeatedly. This afternoon they attacked a minibus of people fleeing the area killing 15 civilians. They have bombed electrical plants throughout Lebanon. Electricity shortages are worse than ever. \n In part of Beirut, there was no electricity for over 30 hours. We have a back-up generator but we have to be frugal with the fuel. The Israelis have not only created a naval blockade, but they have bombed every single port, south (Sidon), middle (Jounieh and Amchit), a primarily Christian area, and north (Tripoli). From the U.S. and Israel’s point of view, Hizbullah is a terrorist organization and they had planned from long before this assault. The Israelis have not only created a naval blockade, but they have bombed every single port, south (Sidon), middle (Jounieh and Amchit), a primarily Christian area, and north (Tripoli). These are all Hizbullah strongholds? They pounded the south of Lebanon almost all day. It has taken me almost all day to write this email as I had to wait for when we had electricity. It is now 10:45 \np.m. A few minutes ago we heard the explosion of bombs. The windows in our house rattled not to mention our nerves. Israel knocked out the lighthouse. Israel has strangulated Lebanon. All Lebanese are suffering. They are moving en masse from the south and from parts of Beirut up into the mountains to seek some semblance of safety.

Embassies are frantically preparing to evacuate their citizens. At least those who have foreign passports have some hope of escaping this strangulation. But if it\’s like anything as in 1982 when Israel invaded Lebanon, they did not allow any ship to leave without first checking the manifest.

The Lebanese have no where to go. Soon there will be no fuel. The damage to the roads will prevent food supplies being delivered. \nDon\’t think for one second that they are targeting only the Hizbullah. And yet, President Bush is asking Syria to ask Hizbullah to stop the attacks. ISRAEL IS DESTROYING LEBANON\’S INFRASTRUCTURE AND PREVENTING INNOCENT PEOPLE FROM LEAVING. \n President Chirac stated yesterday, “One could ask if today there is not a sort of will to destroy Lebanon, its equipment, its roads, its communication.” How can President Bush be so blind when it comes to Israel\’s behavior? How? \n Of course now the damage is done. It\’s too late. Israel continued to destroy more bridges today. They are like a wild dog foaming at the mouth.

How many Israelis killed by Hizbullah? \n 4 That\’s four. Do you think these attacks are aimed only at Hizbullah? Do you think this is an appropriate response to kidnapping two soldiers? The people here are extremely frightened.

As many of you know, I volunteer at the St. Jude Cancer Center for Children. Many of the children come from the south and there is growing concern that these patients will not be able to make it to the American University Hospital in Beirut for their treatments because Israel has destroyed nearly all links to Beirut.

This war was well planned. And just to let you know, the Lebanese army is a joke and everyone knows it. After the Taif accord they were not allowed to rearm. They have no warplanes. The Israelis have the latest F-16\’s. They have nuclear warheads. They have military satellite capabilities. Lebanon has nothing. What does the Lebanese army have? A few US-built helicopters from the Vietnam era! And the Lebanese are supposed to defend themselves against the Israelis who receive over $3 billion in military and other aid from the United States annually?

And is it not true that according to Geneva conventions of warfare, basic infrastructure is to be left untouched, yet this is exactly what Israel has been targeting.

For those in the states, please let your representatives know the truth. Please give this information to the newspapers.”As of this afternoon, so far over 96 Lebanese, mostly civilians have been killed; over 200 wounded—that’s in less than 3 days. P.S.: It\’s Sunday morning. I wasn\’t able to send this last night because of electricity cut. We now have electricity for 12 hours a day. Israel was bombing all night. I woke up many times from the explosions, the latest of which was this morning at 8:00am

  1. janya said,

I wholly agree with you. Our representatives in the USA know all this…. but …..

I used to cry and still do when I see pictures of the Holocaust…. I feel the same way when I see the people of Lebanon suffering. This is unrighteous… Just as unrighteous as what Hitler did… I find it particulary appalling when ISRAEL will not allow relief agencies/red cross to deliver life saving supplies to the people of southern Lebanon. A child is a child ISRAEL wake up! Chosen people do not/should not behave this way.
Cruelty NEVER wins.. goodness and compassion does. Heed the words of Gandhi.
    Keep us posted friend
